For many of us, the appeal of a long-distance hike is to push our bodies to the limit, find out how far we can go. The human body is capable of some incredible feats. It can walk 50 miles in a day, climb 13,000 foot mountain passes and even rush us into town just before the store closes so we can finally have a nice, cold beer. But to do all this, it needs some good fuel.
Eating on the trail is about more than just getting enough calories. Our bodies are in a state of constant recovery and adaptation. To do this day after day, without injury, requires optimal nutrition. It requires food that will calm inflammation, feed your muscles and maintain your immune system. If you're interested in learning how to plan your resupply boxes (or resupply shopping trips) for a faster recovery time, less muscle soreness, and prevention of injury, you've come to the right place.
In the past several summers I have hiked over 4,000 miles, constantly making improvements to my food plan along the way. Now, as a Registered Dietitian, I'm here to help thru-hikers make important dietary changes that may be key in keeping you on the trail longer. Check out the options for hikers below.
